- Physical Activity & You
Congratulations Rockingham Community, keep up the activity! By taking part and increasing your physical activity, you are not just benefiting yourself but helping West Australians become the leaders in addressing the global trend of inactivity.
Stepping Out in Rockingham is a free pedometer loan program that encourages you to use a pedometer to measure the number of steps taken each day over a two-week period. Because the number of steps you take each day varies, the pedometer is a great tool to see how much more activity you may need to do to gain a health benefit.
You can participate in the two-week challenge individually or as part of a team of four in the workplace challenge.
The City of Rockingham is running this exciting project designed to encourage people to ‘step out’ of their homes and into some walking activity! There are lots of places to walk in Rockingham – along the foreshore, beaches, around parks, lakes, along footpaths, shared paths and trails. So stepping out has never been easier!
Individuals
Visit any of our three libraries and loan a pedometer, work through the individual log book for the two-week challenge and hand back your results and pedometer at the end of your loan period.
Stepping Out in Rockingham Workplace Challenge will encourage you and three other participants to use a pedometer to measure the number of steps taken, distance covered each day over a two-week period.
Your team will set a goal to reach by the end of the two weeks and each participant will be required to record their steps and kilometers onto the workplace chart aiming to reach this goal.

The Stepping Out in Rockingham Challenges aim to increase participants’ physical activity awareness and increase physical activity levels among the community. All Rockingham participants will collectively contribute to Rockingham’s virtual walking tour of Australia. How much will you or your team contribute?

Funding has been made available through the Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce Local Activity Grants, which are jointly administered by the Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce and the WA Local Government Association. The State Government, through a Lotterywest grant, has provided the funds for the City of Rockingham to coordinate the "Stepping Out in Rockingham" project.
Australia attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most number of people walking 1 kilometre simultaneously. The Giant Walk – Guinness World Record Challenge was on 1 September 2008.
As part of the double challenge, City of Rockingham challenged City of Mandurah to the most participants in the 1km walk with a trophy up for grabs. Residents & workers were encouraged to take park to help Rockingham & Australia win, regaining the current record from the Canadians.
The day unfortunately came with inclimate weather although 82 residents & workers braved the drizzle equipped with umbrellas & jackets to walk the 1km around beautiful City Park. Not enough numbers to beat City of Mandurah but lets hope it was enough to help towards the numbers needed to beat the Canadians! View pictures from the day…..

Are you making physical activity part of your daily life?
Adults – Minimum of 30 minutes moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all days
5 – 18 year olds – Minimum of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity every day.
The 2006 Adult survey shows that 59% of Western Australian adults were sufficiently active, 29% were insufficiently active and 12% were inactive. This shows an increase in sufficiently active participation over the last four years.
Sufficient physical activity - 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity over five or more sessions OR 60 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity in the previous week.
Insufficient activity – some activity but not enough to reach the levels required for 'sufficient'.
Inactive – No walking, moderate-intensity or vigorous-intensity physical activity in the previous week.
Interestingly between 1999 and 2006, there was a marked increase in respondents using cycling and walking paths (10% to 25%) and public open spaces (10% to 18%). This supports the theory that key environmental determinants can have a positive influence on levels of physical activity. The City of Rockingham provides many interesting places to participate in physical activity, such as parks, reserves, shared paths, foreshores and beaches. Take the time to explore and be active in your City.
Organised Physical Activity – If you are looking to try a new activity or an activity that is more structured, why not join a Local Sport & Recreation Club? Find a Club in the City of Rockingham through the Find a Club portal.
