Beautiful Gardens Competition

The City of Rockingham is holding its annual Beautiful Gardens Competition with nominations being taken until Friday October 16. Each year, gardens throughout the community are judged to find the most loved and beautiful landscapes.

To do this, we receive nominations from local residents, business people, and school representatives who may nominate their own garden, a neighbour’s garden, a local business, commercial or industrial site or school ground according to the various categories.

Some wonderful prize kindly donated by local business and cash incentives for this year’s event are even better than before! Last year’s competition was a great success with the awards presented by Chris Ferreira from Great gardens.

So if you think your garden has what it takes, complete the entry form and post it to:

Conditions of Entry

  • Only gardens within the City of Rockingham's boundaries are eligible for nomination.
  • Only the view of the garden as is normally seen from the public road or footpath open to the general public shall be considered, except categories 'A', 'B' & 'I', unless permission box is marked on entry form.
  • Any garden, which has received 2 awards in a row including last year, is not eligible for another award until a period of 1 year has elapsed since receiving the last award.
  • A council photographer shall be permitted to photograph all gardens entered. Photos will remain the property of City of Rockingham.
  • Information on what is considered a 'Frog Friendly Garden' can be found on various websites.
  • Entrants must notify the City of an appropriate date and time to be judged.
  • The judge’s decision will be final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into.
  • Nominated properties must have knowledge of nomination.

A          part 1   – Single residential Dwelling 1st place ($250 cheque & prize)
A                      – Single residential Dwelling 2nd place ($100 cheque)
A          part 2   – Rural residential Dwelling 1st place ($250 cheque & prize)
A                      – Rural residential Dwelling 2nd place ($100 cheque)
B          part 1   – Multi Unit Residential Dwelling 1st place ($250 cheque)
B                      – Multi unit residential Dwelling 2nd place ($100 cheque)
B          part 2   – Multi unit Residential Complex 1st place (Plaque)
C         part 1   – Tidy Street 1st place (Street sign)
C         part 2   – Tidy Cul-de-sac 1st place (Street sign)
D                     – Native/Water conservation Garden 1st place ($250 cheque & prize)
E                      – Sub-divisional Reserve Development (Plaque)
F                      – Light Industry/Service commercial (Plaque)

Explanation of Categories

A part 1                        - House on a single block of land – front and/or rear gardens/lawn/patio etc.
A part 2                        - House on a rural property – front and/or rear gardens/lawn/patio etc.
B part 1                       - Single unit of duplex/triplex etc – front and/or rear gardens/lawn/patios etc.
B part 2                       - Entire complex of units – combined effort of gardens/lawns/common areas.
C part 1                       - Combined gardens/lawn/street trees/verges of residents of open-end street.
C part 2                       - Combined gardens/lawn/street trees/verges of residents in closed street.
D                                 - An entire property's gardens etc that utilizes majority native & bush friendly plants. Must have low water requirements (eg dripper irrigation).
E                                  - Developer constructed reserve.
F                                  - Gardens of (for example) sports fields, bowling clubs, Indoor sports centres, golf courses, yacht clubs, aquatic centres etc.
G                                 - Schools gardens, natural areas, trees, and ovals within the City of Rockingham.
H                                  - Garden on a residential property providing native habitat for aquatic fauna. See http://www.frogsaustralia.net.au/

Timeline of Events

1.         Advertising with entry forms September
2.         Close of Nominations 16th October
3.         Judging commence 19th October
4.         Final Judging 26th October
